Sep 13, 2013 · After the league agreed to a nearly $400 million settlement fee — $10 million of which will specifically go to medical research — PETA urged fans to tell the NFL not to fund more animal testing.
PETA U.K. also provided funds to support the validation of a non-animal skin irritation test method that was subsequently accepted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and can replace the use of rabbits in dermal testing worldwide.
PETA and its affiliates fund the development of many of these alternatives to animal testing, vigorously promote their use to governments and companies around the world, and publish research on their superiority to traditional animal tests.
(ANIMAL TESTING/ANIMAL CRUELTY) PETA has posted an action alert against the NFL’s alleged funding of animal testing. The organization is petitioning to end the practice of simulating sports injuries on mice, rats, and even dogs.
No one—the NFL included—would tell PETA or animal lovers to sacrifice animal safety or that animal testing is the only answer. However, if PETA truly wants action, it’s barking up the wrong tree.
The National Football League Foundation funds painful and lethal experiments on dogs and other animals. The research is meant to mimic injuries that football players suffer but it doesn’t succeed. It hasn’t helped a single traumatic brain injury patient and probably never will. PETA issued a press release revealing the research.
But PETA’s history of questionable complaints, and the quick fades used in its anti-Covance web presentation, do not inspire confidence. And, given some recent events, maybe some other federal agencies should be investigating PETA itself. In June, two PETA employees at its Norfolk, Va. headquarters were arrested on 31 counts of animal cruelty.
PETA also argues that NIH grants go towards experiments that “involve cruel and expensive experiments on animals that will not save human lives.” In the name of science? One professor at the Oregon Health and Science University got $9.5 million in grants in the last few years to test the effects of obesity and diabetes on monkeys.
PETA also alleged that individuals on testing oversight committees are often involved in animal research themselves, which creates a potential conflict of interest.
PETA (People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the largest animal rights organization in the world and its cruelty-free logo, which has been used by a list of 3,500 cruelty-free companies
