Similarly, color bit-depth and the number of layers and channels in an image affect file size. Photoshop supports a maximum pixel dimension of 300,000 by 300,000 pixels per image. This restriction places limits on the print size and resolution available to an image.
Image size refers to the width and height of an image, in pixels. It also refers to the total number of pixels in the image, but it’s really the width and height we need to care about. I resize an image in Photoshop CC, and save it at a particular size and resolution. When I reopen it, it is at a different size and resolution. Adobe were unable to resolve the problem, advised that I needed a new root account, and referred me to Apple (I use an iMac).

So far in our look at image resolution, we examined the first section of the Image Size dialog box in Photoshop, «Pixel Dimensions», which, as a quick recap, tells us the width and height of our image in pixels, and tells us the file size, which is usually in MB (megabytes, or «millions of bytes»).
Below the width and height fields is a place to enter the desired resolution. The images you work with in Photoshop are composed of pixels, or «dots,» and the resolution determines how many of these dots will be assigned per inch of the image. Resolution is usually measured in «dots per inch» or «d.p.i.»
In Photoshop choose Image>Image size Turn OFF resample. Enter your target resolution into the Resolution filed, in this case 300ppi (if you are targeting 300 DPI, PPI is the digital equivalent)

Use the crop or resize feature in your software to size the image to the desired width and height, and the ppi resolution. Here an image cropped to a size of 3000 x 2400 pixels is being adjusted from 72 ppi to 300 ppi in preparation for printing at 300 ppi.
